Durlston singers, musicians and the community choir- The Choir Engine came together to perform in aid of Oakhaven Hospice and Save the Children raising £3591!

The Durlston School ‘Big Gig’ took place in the school grounds where parents, friends, family and neighbours joined together with picnics on a beautiful summer evening ready to be entertained. The evening was opened by the Year 4 Samba band, playing as they moved from the driveway to the stage and a wonderful musical programme followed. Each year group from Year 3 to 9 (age 7 to 14) performed on the outdoor stage with the children taking responsibility for every aspect. Head Boy and Head Girl welcomed the audience, Music Prefects addressed the audience and the Big Gig Crew, made up of pupils were in charge of much of the planning from the running order to merchandise!

Director of Music, Caroline Moss explained “the Durlston School ‘Big Gig’ was a huge collaborative project, months in the making, and immense thanks go to the whole Music Department, the Big Gig Crew and the many others who played such a crucial role in the night's success.”

Musical performances offered a huge variety and included: an Ibiza Mix by the String Ensemble, an energetic rendition of Video Killed the Radio Star by Year 5, Interval Music from the Durlston Tech Musicians, ‘New York, New York’ by the Choir Engine (Community Choir), ‘Lean on Me’ by the Durlston staff and even a pantomime style cow made an appearance for Year 8’s performance of ‘Texas Hold ‘em’!

To support the fund-raising efforts, an element of competition was added to the night, with each year group being tasked to think of  their own fundraising ideas. From bracelet and cake making to tombola and challenges, the children managed to raise a staggering £3591 for Oakhaven Hospice and Save the Children UK.
